The Civic Trees Story
The founding of Civic Trees
1963
Civic Trees was founded in 1963 by Chris Newman following his involvement with the Civic Trust's successful "Plant More Trees" campaign.
This initiative pioneered the cost effective movement of larger, semi mature trees into urban spaces.
The First European Tree Spade
1968
Civic Trees imported the first Vermeer tree spade into Europe; a mechanical and technical breakthrough that meant trees could be lifted and moved much more quickly.
Planting the English Oak
1972
The first English Oak is planted in the City of London for over 300 years.
The tree, planted at the junction of London Wall and Moorgate still stands today.
Civic Trees are chosen to plant new trees around one of the UKs most iconic urban landscapes, Trafalgar Square.
The Tallest Trees in London
1998
Civic Trees plant seven 14m tall Metasequoia glyptostrobodies at the southern end of Lambeth Bridge, at the time the tallest ever trees planted in Central London
Civic Trees Welcomed to the Glendale Group
2006
Civic Trees is acquired by Parkwood Holdings plc and becomes part of the Glendale group of companies
