Semi-mature Trees at Stocks Golf Club

When Stocks Golf & Country Club in Aldbury, Hertfordshire were looking for a large quantity of semi-mature trees to redefine the shape of their 8th hole, they immediately thought of Civic Trees in neighbouring Tring.

This was the initiative of the club's Captain, Brian Collins, who identified the need for trees to shape certain holes, to become his major project during his year of office, and as Brian said "I wanted to make a real difference to the playing of this course". The club itself nestles under the wooded slopes of Ashridge Forest in North West Herts, and officially it has parkland/links status.

As Brian further commented "one other problem was that, often when players drove from the 8th tee, balls would dangerously approach the nearby 3rd green. This was a situation which clearly needed resolving at an economical price."

It was then necessary for Brian to raise the appropriate funds. So he approached the club's Proprietors, who agreed to match funds raised in the Captain's Projects initiative, and purchase the first 21 trees in phase one of this project. Phase two was donated by members, which allowed for another 12 trees. All 33 trees were strategically planted between the 3rd green and the 8th fairway, and meet the objectives set. "These trees", said Brian, "now provide a definite barrier between the 3rd green and the 8th fairway, have beautifully shaped the holes, and improved them from a golf perspective considerably."
