Good ground preparation, securing and aftercare are as important as the way the tree has been grown in the nursery.
Maybe you have the trees already, but how do you get them into the ground, correctly, safely and successfully?
Advances in machine technology have meant that there are now lots of affordable options when it comes to handling and moving large, delicate trees on site. Large trees, whether rootballed or containerised, need the correct support when being lifted. Civic Trees maintains an extensive fleet of vehicles with specialist equipment dedicated to handling and moving large trees.
Where to plant large treesFrom courtyards to country estates, from a single specimen tree to an entire avenue, trees from 4 metres tall are supplied and guaranteed, having been planted with care, attention and minimum disruption.
Large Trees
• Increase the amount of available habitat space for wildlife
• Have an immediate impact on the surrounding landscape
• Filter more pollution and CO2 from the atmosphere, improving your environment
• Are harder to damage so they are less prone to vandalism
• Offer a reduction in ongoing maintenance costs over small trees
• Provide a density of crown and height to achieve effective screening
• Have broader crowns, giving better shade
• Provide year round colour and interest throughout the landscape
• Create landmarks and help to frame views
Just 3 minutes exposure to ‘green space’ will reduce stress levels, blood pressure and relax muscle tension.
Domestic applicationsPrivate GardensThe last ten years has seen gardening become a much more mainstream and accessible hobby. Increasingly gardeners are seeing the value and impact that larger and more mature trees can have in their own garden environment.
Projects Civic Trees has consulted on range from the supply of a single feature tree on an urban roof terrace up to the supply and planting of a new arboretum with hundreds of specimens at a country estate.
Civic Trees can advise on which trees would best suit a particular location as well as the best planting methods and the aftercare required to ensure the trees establish and thrive.
Whether it is to provide shade to a sunny garden or screen an unsightly view, large trees are a quick and effective way of improving your landscape. From a single feature tree to an avenue or wood, Civic Trees can supply and plant trees to suit most requirements.
Bring wildlife into your landscapeTrees are the cities in which many of our insects and birds live; a mature oak tree can support over 300 different types of wildlife.
Large trees are more amenable to these insects and birds, as they have more room for them to live in; there are more branches for birds to nest in, and as the bark of a tree gets older, it gets more cracks and fissures in it, into which insects can nest. A large expanse of land that was previously too big for insects to get across, can be transformed by using trees as staging posts that they can fly between. Insects and bird life add diversity to your land as they help pollinate other plants.
Even a single tree planted in an urban garden can offer refuge for wildlife, and makes a convenient place to hang a bird feeder. Birds often like a safe, raised area such as a tree, to perch in near to a water feature; it gives them time to survey the surrounding area to make sure it is free from predators.
EquestrianHorse owners will enjoy the instant benefits that using large trees will bring. Even one semi-mature tree can provide shading in a paddock from all the elements for a couple of horses. And if there are several adjacent paddocks - then trees, if positioned correctly, can shade two areas at once. Such planting is an ideal way to fill in the fenced off corners.
Trees can also be used to cast shade onto stable blocks, which can overheat in mid summer - or to hide the necessary muck pile from view.
Don’t forget that you can use shavings as a mulch on your trees, helping to add nutrients to the soil, control weed growth and reduce water loss. However, make sure they are well rotted down first!
Commercial applicationsLocal AuthorityConsider the benefits and added value of planting large trees in your community.
Large trees have immediate impact - their size and scale means they fit in with the surrounding landscape.
An area can be enhanced overnight by adding a mature landscape to mature buildings.
Their size makes them less prone to vandalism as they are harder to damage.
By growing for longer in nursery conditions, less management and pruning is required after planting to develop a strong, well shaped specimen.
Large tree planting makes a statement about the intentions of the funding body – "We want tree cover in this location and we are prepared to pay for it."
Tree planting creates instant shaded areas in public open spaces or school grounds and can reduce the need for air conditioners to cool asgacent buildings.
Civic Trees offers a complete supply and plant service for semi-mature trees followed by on-going maintenance and aftercare service, coupled with guarantees and warranties to ensure successful re-establishment.

Public ReamPlanting in the public realm has been Civic Trees core business for nearly 50 years.
Ever since the company was founded as part of the Civic Trust’s ‘Plant More Trees’ Campaign in 1962 it has been working closely with local authorities, public bodies and land owners to use trees to enhance public space. There are many benefits from tree planting including increased property values, reduced anti social behaviour and improvements to health & well being.
Civic Trees is proud to be part of the Trees & Design Action Group (www.tdag.org.uk), a pioneering group of individuals, professionals and organisations from both the private and public sectors who have come together to increase awareness of the role of trees in the built environment.
Civic-PlinthThe safe, effective and secure method for underground guying of large trees. The Civic-Plinth was developed by Civic Trees as an underground guying system for locations where overhead guying is not a suitable option, for example in public places or street planting.
The Civic-Plinth system eliminates the danger of damaging hidden underground services such as water pipes and cables, caused by driving ground anchors and stakes into the ground – and provides a unique support for all shapes of rootball.
Advantages of the Civic-Plinth• Secure anchoring without the use of stakes or ground anchors that can often cause damage to underground services.
• Secure anchoring in all soils, especially light sandy soils where stakes and ground anchors do not hold fast.
• It remains taut and effective because it inhibits sinking.
• It is made of non-toxic material, is pathogen protected and bio-degradable.
• It is inexpensive and simple to install without the need for special tools.
WarrantyGood maintenance and aftercare is the key to successfully establishing a newly planted tree.
There are 4 elements to maintenance:
- Watering
- Fertilising
- Weeding
- Support
Civic Trees offers maintenance notes to all customers after planting, guiding them on how best to care for their new trees.
However, good maintenance will only help a tree re-establish if it is a good specimen and has been correctly planted, which is why all trees supplied and planted by Civic Trees are guaranteed.
Civic Trees guarantees the quality of all trees supplied and planted – including their selection true to type, lifting, transportation and planting; all in accordance with BS 4043 semi-mature tree transplanting.
If you are buying a deciduous tree in the dormant winter months without any leaves on, we will undertake to replace it, free of charge, should it fail to come into leaf the spring after planting.
For trees planted in leaf, these can only be guaranteed in conjunction with a Replacement and Inspection Warranty.
This guarantee is subject to unchanged access and the availability of replacement trees.
Civic Trees can offer a warranty on all trees supplied and planted by the company. It is available in blocks of 12 months from the time of planting – up to a maximum of 5 years.
Trees under warranty are subject to a comprehensive maintenance programme to ensure their successful re-establishment. This includes 2 inspection visits to feed, check tree condition and supports – but is conditional on your watering and weeding the trees to our specification.
Both visits are followed by a written report into the state of the trees, which will include any remedial work that should be performed.
Assuming that access and site conditions are the same, as at the time of planting, and subject to the right tree being available, any tree that fails during the warranty period will be replaced like for like. Also, the failed tree will be removed.
The warranty replaces any tree that fails during the period of cover, excluding trees that fail through malicious damage or vandalism, failure by the client, his employees, staff, agents or sub-contractors. Death due to fire, drought, storm, excessive wind, water logging, earthquake, human or animal interference (including beetle attack) and pollution, both airborne and soil borne, are also excluded.
A watering and weeding service is also available at an extra cost.
