Plant - Domestic applications

Private Gardens
Whether it is to provide shade to a sunny garden or screen an unsightly view, large trees are a quick and effective way of improving your landscape.

From a single feature tree to an avenue or wood, Civic Trees can supply and plant trees to suit most requirements.

Bring wildlife into your landscape
Trees are the cities in which many of our insects and birds live; a mature oak tree can support over 300 different types of wildlife. Large trees are more amenable to these insects and birds, as they have more room for them to live in. There are more branches for birds to nest in, and as the bark of a tree gets older, it gets more cracks and fissures in it, into which insects can nest. A large expanse of land that was previously too big for insects to get across, can be transformed by using trees as staging posts that they can fly between. Insects and bird life add diversity to your land, and are important members of the ecosystem as they help pollinate other plants.

Even a single tree planted in an urban garden can offer refuge for wildlife, and makes a convenient place to hang a bird feeder. Birds often like a safe, raised area such as a tree, to perch in near to a water feature; it gives them time to survey the surrounding area to make sure it is free from predators.

Estate owners
Large trees have been used on country estates to create vistas and avenues that lead into the landscape, to form focal points in their own right, offer shade and shelter to grazing cattle and even to make covers for guns on shooting estates. We have also planted mature evergreen hedgerows to act as game baffles, forcing game birds to the air when being driven.

Enhance the entrance to your property using large trees to line your driveway or to set-off your gates. You don’t need to have a long drive to create a welcoming avenue. If the proportions are correct then just 4 trees, two either side, will create a beautiful feature and the tree species can be selected to give either an open columnar effect, or an overhanging drive through experience.
Equestrian
Horse owners will enjoy the instant benefits that using large trees will bring. Even one semi-mature tree can provide shading in a paddock from all the elements for a couple of horses. And if there are several adjacent paddocks - then trees, if positioned correctly, can shade two areas at once. Such planting is an ideal way to fill in the fenced off corners.

Trees can also be used to cast shade onto stable blocks, which can overheat in mid summer - or to hide the necessary muck pile from view.

Don’t forget that you can use shavings as a mulch on your trees, helping to add nutrients to the soil, control weed growth and reduce water loss. However, make sure they are well rotted down first!
